What is a “green pool” - and what causes it?

“Green pool” is a term usually used to describe a pool or spa where the water has been affected by algae growth. Pool water may also appear green as a result of rust, leaves or pollen in the pool, although this is less common.

Algae blooms in pools are often caused by an imbalance in your water’s chemicals. Usually, this is due to insufficient chlorine.

Your pool may have insufficient chlorine because you haven’t been regularly adding chlorine to the water. Or, it may have insufficient chlorine due to recent heavy or unusual use. When a pool is put under this sort of pressure, it may require more than the usual dose of chlorine to fight off encroaching algae. This is a good example of why you can’t take a one-size-fits-all approach to your pool’s regular chlorine treatment.

If you have the right level of chlorine in your pool, and are still experiencing a green pool, your water’s pH may not be properly balanced. With the wrong pH, your chlorine can’t do its job properly.

    First, you will need to ensure your water has been properly tested to determine exactly what chemicals need to be used, and in what quantities, to fix your green pool.

  • It is not recommended that you swim in a green pool. Whilst algae alone may not be harmful, several other bacteria are likely to also be present in your pool which can be very harmful.

  • The turnaround time can vary depending on your pool size, time since last service and severity of the algae build up. Our technicians will ensure the exact amounts of chemicals are used for your particular situation to get your pool back to normal as fast as possible.

  • It is not recommended that you swim in a green pool. Due to the unknown bacteria, parasites and other harmful pathogens that may be present in the water, there is a risk that swimming in a green pool will result in adverse effects.
